Music
As well as listening to music, you could get involved in making it too.
Most people like listening to music. It has an amazing power to make you feel so many different things:
- happy
- sad
- relaxed
- confident
- sleepy
- lively
For every mood there is music to listen to.
Where to listen to music
Apart from listening to music on your iPod or stereo, or on the telly or radio, you can hear it live, in person. Oxfordshire has lots of different places where you can go to listen to music, from classical and choral music at college chapels and in the Sheldonian Theatre, to restaurants and clubs and festivals. Your local newspapers should have information on what’s going on, and look out for posters in your community.
Making music
At school you get opportunities to make music, from singing to playing the recorder. But maybe you’ve always fancied trying the violin or learning the piano.
- If you want to try playing something new or singing in a choir and your school doesn’t offer any opportunities in this area, you will probably find opportunities elsewhere.
- Learning an instrument can be expensive – depending on what the instrument is! Why not hire instruments first, so you can see if you really like playing them or not?
If you want to find out more about what you could do in music, look at Oxfordshire County Council’s Music Service’s web pages. Here you can find loads of information on:
- musical lessons
- groups
- hiring instruments
- workshops and events
- and other activities.
Other opportunities
Schools often receive information from companies that run musical workshops in the holidays so look out for these in the future.
There are also special music schools that run throughout the county – check them out here.
