Learning outdoors

Not all learning takes place in a classroom!

Oxfordshire County Council has a long history of providing education outdoors and offers schoolchildren lots of opportunities to learn about their surroundings and their environment, while also helping with their schoolwork and personal development.

Outdoor centres

While you’re at school you’ll experience outdoor learning at some of the following places:

  • Hill End – a 65-acre site near Wytham Woods just outside of Oxfordshire. It’s a great place for wildlife, including ponds, streams, grassland and woodland. When you visit, you might stay overnight.
  • Kilvrough Manor– this isn’t in Oxfordshire, it’s in South Wales. Schoolchildren go there to enjoy lots of different activities on land and in the water. If you go there you will probably stay for a few days in an old manor house.
  • Oxford & District School Sailing Association and Riverside Centre– provide sailing and other outdoor and water activities for young people and families.
